For the first time on Greek soil, on Sunday, July 30, the International Finance Olympiad took place in a hybrid manner with physical participants, high school students from 16 countries, all continents, and another 33 remotely.

After 3 years of online competition (due to the pandemic), the participants with their coaches and companions, promoted the spirit of noble competition, interculturalism, and international cooperation. The 20 or so volunteers of the Finance department, stayed awake and helped in all phases of the competition with their tireless consistency and hard work.

The third phase of the Olympiad (the semi-final and final), included a team test, during which the teams would have to analyze and document an investment answer, to an economic-technical question, which was revealed to them just 24 hours before.

One of the 7 judges of the last phase, John Gialamas from Prosvation, present for the second time in a similar presentation of business student solutions, told us: “What happened in the building of Economics in Volos is magical. Young people succeed and cooperate with each other, but also with other groups, putting glasses on large organizations. In addition, the proposals and documentation heard made the work of the international jury very difficult. It is admirable that they managed to do so much research, structure and arrive at investment decisions, and dress up in beautiful presentations, their well-structured speeches, all in one day. Really, their coaches in the schools, but also in Portaria where they live, did an amazing job! I had the pleasure of rating 14 countries. Also, for reasons of objectivity, I tried to be a little stricter with the Greek team, which responded deservedly, and made us proud.”

The representatives of the Greek mission, thanks to their personal systematic study, managed to stand out and rise to 2nd place, and they deserve many congratulations.

The 5 Greek students, from Athens and Thessaloniki, have qualified for this phase from the 4th Panhellenic Student Economics Competition, which was organized by the Department of Economics of the University of Thessaly with the official permission of the Ministry of Education (completed in February). In the last months, and received the methodical guidance of the responsible professors of the Department of Economic Sciences of the Univ. of Thessaly.

The support from the Ph.D. candidate, Beno Christos, and Spyros Terzis, and Eleni Kisiris was of vital importance.

With a very important sponsorship, the company Grant Thornton showed its support to the institution. Also, Alpha Bank was an important reason for the flawless conduct, with a donation to cover many expenses. Finally, the company Intercomm Foods from Larissa provided gifts to the participants. You can watch the final phase on the YouTube channel of the International Economics Olympiad.
